I’M LOOKING FOR AN ADULT ADHD ASSESSMENT
Could ADHD help explain some of the difficulties you have experienced?
Perhaps you have been wondering for some time whether you might have ADHD.
You may have always found concentration, organisation, time management or motivation difficult. Perhaps you feel easily distracted, forgetful or overwhelmed. You might find yourself starting lots of things but struggling to finish them or needing to put enormous effort into staying organised.
For some adults, ADHD can involve restlessness, impulsivity or a constantly busy mind. For others, particularly those who have developed effective ways of coping, the signs can be much less obvious.
If you are wondering whether ADHD could be part of the picture, an ADHD assessment can help you understand more about yourself and what might be contributing to your difficulties.
WE TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH
We don’t start with a diagnosis. We start with understanding.
At Cura Psychology, we don’t believe that everyone who wonders whether they have ADHD needs to follow exactly the same assessment pathway.
That is why we start with you.
Before recommending an ADHD assessment pathway, we offer an initial face-to-face appointment with an experienced clinician.
This gives us the opportunity to understand what has brought you to us, the difficulties you are experiencing, your history and what you are hoping to understand.
It also gives you the opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of whether an ADHD assessment feels like the right next step.
WHY START WITH A FACE-TO-FACE ASSESSMENT?
There can be many reasons why someone experiences difficulties with concentration, organisation, motivation, memory, emotional regulation or managing everyday demands.
ADHD may be part of the picture, but it may not be the whole picture.
Sometimes there are other factors to consider. Sometimes there may be several things happening at once. And sometimes what initially looks like ADHD requires a different kind of psychological assessment.
Our initial face-to-face appointment allows us to step back and consider the wider picture before recommending what happens next.
We believe this is an important part of providing thoughtful, individualised psychological care.
A PATHWAY THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU
Following your initial appointment, we will discuss our recommendations with you. Depending on what we learn, this might mean progressing to a comprehensive adult ADHD assessment. For some people, however, a different psychological assessment or another form of support may be more appropriate.
We want you to understand why we are recommending a particular pathway and what it is designed to help you understand. You are not simply placed onto a standard assessment package without first considering your individual circumstances.

WHAT IS AN ADULT ADHD ASSESSMENT?
ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. It is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, activity levels and impulse control.
ADHD can look very different from one person to another.
For adults, difficulties may include:
- Concentrating on tasks, particularly when they are repetitive or uninteresting
- Becoming intensely focused on things that are particularly interesting
- Procrastinating or finding it difficult to get started
- Managing time and deadlines
- Organising work and everyday responsibilities
- Forgetting appointments, commitments or where things have been put
- Starting tasks but struggling to complete them
- Feeling overwhelmed by everyday demands
- Restlessness or difficulty relaxing
- Interrupting or acting impulsively
- Managing frustration and emotions
- Difficulties at work, in relationships or at home
Experiencing some of these difficulties does not necessarily mean that you have ADHD. This is why a comprehensive assessment is important.
ADHD IN ADULTS
Many adults reach adulthood without ever having considered ADHD.
You may have managed well at school, but found university, employment, relationships, parenthood or the increasing demands of adult life much harder.
You may have developed strategies that helped you manage. Perhaps you rely heavily on lists, reminders, routines or last-minute pressure to get things done.
From the outside, you may appear organised and successful.
Inside, however, life can feel exhausting.
For some people, an ADHD assessment provides an explanation for experiences that have been difficult to make sense of for many years.
ADHD IN WOMEN
ADHD can be under-recognised in women and girls.
Some women develop effective coping strategies or learn to compensate for their difficulties. They may work particularly hard, become perfectionistic, over-prepare or rely heavily on routines and organisation to keep everything together.
This can mean that ADHD is not recognised until adulthood.
If you have spent years wondering why everyday tasks seem to require so much effort, an assessment can help you explore whether ADHD could be part of the explanation.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ADHD ASSESSMENT?
If, following your initial appointment, an ADHD assessment is recommended, this will involve exploring your experiences in greater depth.
A comprehensive adult ADHD assessment considers more than your current symptoms.
We will explore areas such as:
- Your current experiences – We will consider the difficulties you are experiencing now and how they affect your everyday life.
- Your childhood and development – ADHD-related difficulties begin during childhood, even when they were not recognised or diagnosed at the time. We will therefore explore your early development, childhood experiences and time at school.
- Education and employment – We will consider your experiences of education and work, including organisation, attention, planning, completing tasks and managing responsibilities.
- Relationships and everyday life – ADHD can affect more than work or education. We will consider the impact of your experiences on relationships, home life and everyday responsibilities.
Using QbCheck as part of your ADHD assessment
As part of our ADHD assessment process, we may use QbCheck, a computer-based assessment that provides objective information about aspects of attention, impulsivity and activity.
QbCheck combines a computerised attention task with measurement of movement. This gives us additional information about how you respond to different demands during the assessment.
Importantly, QbCheck is not a stand-alone diagnostic test for ADHD. We use it alongside our clinical assessment, developmental history and other information to help build a fuller picture of your experiences.
We believe this combination of clinical expertise and objective assessment can be particularly helpful when considering whether ADHD is the most appropriate explanation for the difficulties you are experiencing.
Why use QbCheck?
ADHD is complex, and no single test can provide the answer.
QbCheck gives us another source of information to consider alongside what you tell us and what we learn about your experiences over time.
It can provide information about areas such as:
- Attention and the ability to respond consistently to a task
- Impulsive responses
- Activity and movement during the assessment
- How your performance compares with age- and sex-matched reference data
We then consider these findings as part of the wider clinical picture.
We will also consider other psychological, developmental and contextual factors that may be contributing to your experiences. The aim is to develop a clear understanding of you, rather than simply identifying whether you meet a list of symptoms.
WHAT IF I’M NOT SURE I HAVE ADHD?
You don’t need to be certain.
In fact, uncertainty is one of the reasons why an initial face-to-face appointment can be so useful.
You may have read about ADHD online and recognised yourself in some of the descriptions. Perhaps someone close to you has suggested that you might have ADHD. Or perhaps you have simply reached a point where you want to understand why certain things have always felt difficult.
There are many possible explanations for difficulties with concentration, memory, organisation and emotional regulation.
Our role is to help you explore these carefully. Sometimes an assessment confirms ADHD. Sometimes it identifies another explanation. Sometimes there are several overlapping factors.
Whatever the outcome, having a clearer understanding of your experiences can be an important step forward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your Title Goes Here
Do I need to know that I have ADHD before contacting you?
No.
You do not need to be certain that you have ADHD before getting in touch.
Our initial face-to-face appointment is an opportunity to explore your concerns and consider whether an ADHD assessment is the most appropriate next step.
Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD if they weren't diagnosed as children?
Yes.
Many adults are diagnosed later in life. An assessment will explore childhood and developmental history because ADHD-related difficulties begin during childhood, even if they were not recognised at the time.
Can ADHD and anxiety or depression occur together?
Yes.
ADHD can occur alongside other mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions.
This is one of the reasons why we believe it is important to consider the wider picture rather than assuming that ADHD explains every difficulty.
Do women experience ADHD differently?
ADHD can present differently in women and girls, and it has historically been under-recognised.
Some women develop strategies that help them compensate for their difficulties, meaning that ADHD may not be recognised until later in life.
Can an online ADHD questionnaire diagnose ADHD?
Questionnaires can form part of an ADHD assessment, but they should not be used on their own to make a diagnosis.
A proper assessment considers your current difficulties alongside your developmental history and wider circumstances.
Can you prescribe medication?
No, we provide follow up support, advice and coaching if desired but we do not prescribe medication.
If you chose to explore medication we can talk to you about your options and guide you to reputable clinics.
What happens if ADHD isn't the right explanation?
That is okay.
Our initial assessment is designed to help us understand what may be contributing to your difficulties.
If ADHD does not appear to be the most appropriate explanation, we will discuss what we think may be more helpful and, where appropriate, recommend an alternative pathway which we can offer with our team of trusted clinicians.
Do you offer Right to Choose?
